Cups on Cactus
January 18, 2008 | By Kelley Koehler | Filed Under About Tucson
Well, it’s winter in Tucson. You can tell by all the styrofoam cups on the cactus tips.
What, you don’t have cups on your cactus?
The sytrofoam cups protect the delicate growing ends of the cactus, so that they don’t freeze during some of our colder Tucson winter nights.

Got something to say?

Around the holidays you see santa hats on the ends. Not sure which is better. I heard you don’t want to use any type of plastic, because it holds in moisture.
Nice picture.
Hi Pat – I hadn’t heard that about the plastic cups, although I guess I’ve only seen styrofoam.
I pass this cactus on my way home – I love that the owner very carefully put cups on every tip!
I grew up in AZ but never saw the cups on the cactus. Must be a tucson thing!
