Tucson Answers: What Do You Think? Stump the Housechick - Saguaro Protection Laws
Mar 11

Yesterday, there were a pair of hawks in my eucalyptus tree - I’m thinking they are Cooper’s Hawks, but I’m not expert at identifying birds.

hawks in the tree

Turns out, they eat other birds.  Pretty though.

Which reminds me.   I’m not a cat-owner, but a quick reminder to people with cats moving to Tucson: we have owls and other birds of prey that will eat your small cat if you leave it outside at night, especially if you live in one of the lower density areas of the city.  Keep Kitty inside at night.

One Response to “Hawks in Tucson”

those are indeed cooper’s hawks. they are very common in central tucson. himmel park always has at least 1 nesting pair. we have them around our house where they work hard to keep the dove and quail population in check. they’re very brazen about it, too. they’ll come right into our patios to snatch young birds and pick off doves that hang out by our pond. i highly doubt they’d bother to mess with a cat or dog unless they were very young and small. coyotes and foxes are MUCH higher risk factors. parrots, on the other hand, would be considered tasty hawk food….
